I needed to monitor my blood pressure due to starting a new medication that could cause my blood pressure to rise. I set it up and started taking my blood pressure daily. The Index kept telling me I had Stage 1 and Stage 2 blood pressure. So I followed up with my doctor as soon as I could. Well, my blood pressure is fine. After numerous attempts and frustration we were finally able to \"exchange\" it which we would have thought we should get a \"new\" device one since it never would activate, but we received a refurbished device as a replacement of a brand new device. I tried setting up the replacement (refurbished...) and the display is so faint you cant read it, but yet again it will not advance through set up. Functionality is great and it seems to be very accurate. What I did not like and still have issues is how Garmin supports this. WE had to pay for a replacement unit and when new unit got here it had the same issue as previous. Would not load update so we could not add a second user... after additional back and fourth with support Garmin made an update on the server side and bam unit upgraded and both with and i could use. We still have an issue with timestamp of the unit as it does not update to local time and is stuck using UTC ,,, We both use this and because we are older and need to track our BP a critical part of our daily routine. Previously I used a battery operated unit with a separate cuff which worked fine, but was cumbersome with the tubes & harder to pack away - so much so that I never travelled with it. The Index is definitely easy to pack & use anywhere.\n\nI've found it accurate with repeatable measurements. Other reviewers report otherwise, but I suspect they may not be using the unit as requested by Garmin. I get the most accurate measurements as follows:\n\n\n\n1. Use early in morning after getting up but before any meal or exercise.\n\n\n\n2. Place cuff on arm then sit motionless with slow steady breathing for at least 6 minutes before starting unit, feet flat on the floor, sitting up straight, cuffed arm resting on table or arm of chair, cuff at level of heart. I don't have a conversation or try and use a mobile device etc. The idea is to let your heart rate and BP stabilize at a true resting state. If you're into meditation this is a good time!\n\n\n\n3. I use the 3 reading average setting and remain motionless breathing deeply for the whole 7 minutes or so that takes. Note that a whole measurement cycle - 6 minutes for stabilizing and 7 minutes for 3 reading average will take about 15 minutes. If I don't have time for that, I don't take a measurement that day. I'd rather have fewer good accurate readings than more inaccurate readings influenced by variable levels of activity.\n\n\n\nNone of those techniques are specific to the Garmin Index. It's simply what is required to get accurate baseline data of blood pressure. Heart rate and BP vary continuously during the day with changes in activity, posture and position so the most accurate measurements keep all of those factors constant.\n\n\n\nThe only improvement I'd like to see would be powering the unit with its own lithium battery pack recharged with a USB 3 connector.
