How to Choose a Soccer Ball

Whether you’re new to the sport or buying your own soccer ball for the first time, finding the right one can make all the difference in your game. With so many types, sizes, and materials available, it can be tough to know where to start. Our Soccer Experts break down what to look for, so you can feel confident picking the best soccer ball for your needs.

Types of Soccer Balls

You’ll notice two main types of soccer balls—match and training. Each is designed with a specific use in mind, whether it’s practicing with friends or playing in an official match.

Match Soccer Balls

  • Designed for official games

  • Typically made with high-quality materials for better touch and durability

  • Approved by organizations like FIFA or NFHS for competitive play

Training Soccer Balls

  • Built for everyday practice and recreational use

  • More affordable than match balls

  • Durable construction to withstand frequent use on various surfaces

Choosing the Correct Soccer Ball Size

Soccer balls come in different sizes based on age and skill level. Using the correct size is important for proper skill development and safety.

Size 5 Soccer Balls

Size 5 soccer balls are the standard for players ages 13 and older. With a circumference between 27 and 28 inches, these soccer balls offer the ideal size and weight for high school, collegiate, and adult athletes.

Size 4 Soccer Balls

Size 4 soccer balls are sized for athletes between 8 and 12 years. Slightly smaller and lighter than a full-size ball, Size 4 soccer balls help young players develop proper footwork, control, and confidence on the field. With a circumference between 25 and 26 inches, these soccer balls offer the ideal size and weight for youth practices and games.

Size 3 Soccer Balls

Size 3 soccer balls are best for players 7 years and younger. With a smaller, lighter design, these soccer balls help young athletes build confidence and develop basic skills like dribbling, passing, and shooting. Featuring a circumference of 23 to 24 inches, Size 3 soccer balls are perfect for youth practices, backyard play, and introductory leagues.

Size 1 Soccer Balls

Size 1 soccer balls are the smallest option available and are designed for players of any skill level. These mini soccer balls are perfect for improving footwork, ball control, and tricks for older athletes, while also serving as a fun, beginner-friendly option for toddlers and young kids.

Materials & Construction of Soccer Balls

The material and construction of a soccer ball can affect its durability, feel, and performance. Here’s what to look for:

  • Casing (Outer Cover):  This part is typically made from synthetic leather to offer good durability and touch. Many soccer balls feature a textured surface to help improve grip and control, especially in wet conditions.

  • Lining (Inner Layers): Beneath the outer cover, multiple layers of foam, polyester, or cotton help the ball maintain its shape and provide cushioning. Higher-quality balls often have more layers for improved touch and responsiveness.

  • Bladder: The bladder is the innermost part of the ball that holds air. There are two main types of bladders—latex and butyl. Latex offers better touch and responsiveness but requires frequent inflation, while a butyl bladder offers excellent air retention and durability making them common in training and recreation soccer balls.

  • Panels: Most soccer balls feature stitched panels, traditionally in a 32-panel design

Choosing the right soccer ball is crucial for both player development and performance on a  variety of playable surfaces. If you have any more questions about soccer balls or want to check out other essential soccer equipment, head to your local SCHEELS and speak with an Expert!
